I’ve always dreamt of being boho. Do you know what I mean? I think I had images in my mind of tall, waify models with long hair wearing the coolest bohemian clothes. Loose, effortlessly cool dresses that look like you didn’t try yet seemlessly pulled off the chicest look. Maybe I watched one too many episodes of the Rachel Zoe Project. Since, clearly, I’m not tall or waify, I sort of gave up my dream of being bohemian beautiful and settled for classic Southern preppy- semi-conservative but on the cusp of trendy. Then my friend Windy (a talented, creative artist, of course) told me about a line of jewelry that changed everything….
The Necklace that Started the Craze
Back in November of 2012, Martha Clifford and her niece Morgan designed a wooden bead necklace with a stone bead and tassel. Sounds simple, but the details of that necklace are quite impressive. Fast forward to summer of 2014 and people are still asking for the original. Despite countless new designs, the stone bead necklace remains the Melvin icon. It was my first purchase, I bought it at the Melvin studio, and I will always love it. But I can’t stop there…
I also am fond of my song tag, which is one of the most popular Melvin pieces. The price is perfect for gift giving and they are just so cool. You’ll see ladies at Hilliard Studio Method wearing the ones Melvin designed especially for them and I have one that I purchased after reading an awesome book called It Is What It Is by the talented and witty Charlottean, Sherry Harris. Song tags can be worn at the gym or added to make an outfit more fabulous. They’re amazing.
The Power of the Hashtag
Just last summer I was at a social media workshop listening to someone try to explain hashtags to a group of over 30-somethings and it was hilarious. I am clueless when it comes to technology, but I will tell you who isn’t, Whitney Hardin, Martha’s right hand women. I love Whitney because of many reasons; to me, she was the first face of Melvin, as Martha was on vacation when I visited the studio for the first time. Whitney is a social media guru who has strategically grown their Instagram following to over 3500. Whitney sites Instagram as the tool that took Melvin to the next level. Made in the USA, Melvin is now sold in nearly a dozen states, including New York, Texas, and Illinois. Stores often sell out before their shipment even arrives.
So Much Melvin, So Little Time
I have been to the studio more times than I would like to admit, especially to my husband. But I can’t help myself. I want EVERYTHING in there. I try to pace myself but now I’m addicted to layering multiple Melvin pieces and I just can’t get enough for every look! I think I love my pieces so dearly because I know the owner, the designers, and my pieces truly are custom made. Since I’m on the shorter side of their customer base, they will shorten the length of my necklaces so they fall just right. The only thing more amazing than boutique Melvin is custom Melvin!
